Abstract:

Many of the better war novels written since World War 2 are focused on the high-ranking military commander. Whereas in the early novels general officers were merely undifferentiated, functionalized creatures of the environment that wars inevitably produce, these books examine commanders in detail, creating figures whose personal and professional attributes produce implications that reach beyond the battlefield, sometimes not dissipated by wars end. The document examines the fictional portrayal of such officers. Author
