Fluorescence lifetimes, steady-state and time-dependent fluorescence spectra of 1-anilino-8-naphthalene sulfonate ANS have been measured at several temperatures and in a variety of solvents. The fluorescence of ANS showed a large temperature-dependent spectral shift as well as time dependent spectral shifts in the nanosecond range. The results are interpreted in terms of solvent-excited solute relaxation processes involving the lowest excited singlet state of ANS. It was also found that at least part of the increase in the fluorescence quantum yield with decreasing solvent polarity involves an increase in the radiative transition probability. Author
