Three series of studies of the nutritional value of Office of Civil Defense shelter rations were carried out. In the first, nitrogen balance and weight change of young adult male volunteers receiving various quantities of OCD crackers with and without added calories or isocaloric protein-free diets or diets of known adequacy were compared. In the second series, nitrogen balance and weight change of young female volunteers were measured when various quantities of lysine were added to a diet of OCD crackers and a protein-free source of calories. In the third series of studies it was shown that none of the OCD rations biscuits, crackers or wafers supported satisfactory reproduction in the rat when fed during pregnancy and lactation both the survival and growth of the progency were seriously impaired.
