CALCIUM BINDING PROTEIN: ENDOGENOUS INDUCTION.

Endogenous induction of CaBP was demonstrated in rachitic chicks by surgically isolating a segment of duodenum from the functioning portion, leaving its blood supply intact, followed by oral administration of vitamin D3. CaBP was induced in the nonfuctioning segment, indicating that the lumenal environment is not critical to the induction of the protein. Thus, adaptation to various dietary calcium concentrations is likely to occur via endogenous regulating factors, rather than due to a direct effect of pH or calcium concentration in the duodenal lumen.
