Abstract:
The problem of optimally allocating available effort to search for an object at sea comprises a major class of problems in naval warfare. This thesis presents in some detail Koopmans classic two-region and continuous search models, along with the n-region discrete model which provides some continuity between the two. Brief summaries of four of the more important extensions to the basic theory are also included.
