The development of a statistical model for electrons in atoms, based on a local coulomb approximation, is briefly described. In this approximation, the one electron potential is represented by a coulomb potential with variable coefficient. The model predicts some of the features of atomic shell structure. Calculations of total energy are greatly improved over energies calculated on the basis of the Thomas-Fermi model. Comparisons with Thomas-Fermi and Hartree-Fock-Slater calculations are given. Author
