The splitting of the hextet D72 and hextet D92 energy levels of Gd3 ions in CaF2, SrF2, and BaF2 hosts was measured through absorption experiments at 77K. For each host, crystals with several doping concentrations from 0.1 to 0.85 mole were used so that line growth patterns could be studied. Comparisons with previously identified lines of the hextet P transitions were helpful in identifying the location of the charge compensating ion that produces the various crystal fields. The sites identified in the hextet D72 spectra were the C3v111 in BaF2 crystals, C4v100 in SrF2, and both cubic and tetragonal in CaF2. Author
