The objective of this study was to examine available data on soil response under earthquake and nuclear attack loading to determine if the mechanics of differential settlement andor liquefaction inducded by each were sufficiently similar to enable one to identify possible structural and utility damage in existing cities at time of nuclear attack. The damage reports from twelve earthquakes and two nuclear attacks Hiroshima and Nagasaki were analyzed, and it was concluded that in areas of similar soil conditions there was a strong correlation of physical damage. The examination of the general foundation conditions of eight American cities in light of these findings indicated possible serious structural or utility damage due to differential settlement andor liquefaction at time of nuclear attack.
