Abstract:

The compressive strength of paperboard cartons is discussed in relation to theories of buckling of plates and other simple structures. Earlier investigations in this field are surveyed and the forms of the empirical relations connecting the compressive strength with the board stiffness are compared. It is pointed out that besides the stiffness, which is the only material characteristic appearing in such relations, the plasticity of the base material should also be given proper attention. Not only are plastic effects likely to be responsible for the destruction occurring in a carton compression test, but they seem to play an important role even at small deformations, as for instance in conventional stiffness testing. The theory of plastic buckling shows the way in which stiffness and plasticity should be combined when the carton strength is expressed in terms of the board parameters. Author
