Abstract:

When 2,6-xylenol is oxidised with chlorine dioxide in an aqueous solution the following compounds are the main products 2,6-dimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone, an alpha, beta-epoxy ketone, and 4-chloro-2,6-dimethylphenol. If oxidised in carbon tetrachloride solution, the xylenol gives the Diels-Alder dimer of 6-chloro-2,6-dimethyl-cyclohexa-2,4-dien-1-one in a low yield. Mesitol yields by oxidation in aqueous solution an alpha, beta-epoxy ketone, a chlorination product of this epoxy ketone, and 2,4,6-trimethyl-p-quinol. Author
