Abstract:
It was shown that the essential requirement for rigid packages is form stability, which can be related to the specific stiffness of the material used in the manufacture of the package. This concept makes it possible to calculate, in a comparatively simple manner, the role played by the material in the finished packaging construction. A quantitative comparison of different packaging materials was made with respect to the cost involved in the attainment of a desired specific stiffness. The relation stiffnessdensity is also studied as well as the share of transportation cost attributable to the package. Author
