Abstract:

A study has been made of the influence of permanganate charge, reaction time and temperature on the brightness and viscosity of pulp bleached with potassium permanganate. This has enabled an evaluation of the use of potassium permanganate in the production of semi- or fully bleached pulp. Increased chemical charge, temperature and time increase the brightness of the pulp, however, when certain threshold values are exceeded the increase obtained is small. A brightness of 90 SCAN can be achieved using permanganate in the final bleaching stage although the same brightness is obtained more cheaply with chlorine dioxide. Author
