Fracture phenomena in polycrystalline magnesium subject to explosive-loading have been investigated in the pressure range of approximately 60 K bars to 110 K bars. It was found that the types of fractures were influenced by shock strength as well as wave reflections on grain boundaries and specimen edges. The results were interpreted in terms of phenomenological observations and in the light of dislocation pile-up in the specimens in a highly dynamic stress field during shock-leading. Author
