The objectives of fuel gage design can, and should, be derived by minimizing, with respect to the characteristics of the fuel gage, the over-all cost of any specified operation. The pertinent factors are tactical, structural, aerodynamic, psychological, and chemical in nature. A sample quantitative derivation of a fuel gage design objective is carried through. The pertinent information on fuels, airframes, and the atmosphere, regarded as the environment of a fuel gage is summarized. A classification of fuel-gaging principles is illustrated by roughly 140 new suggestions for fuel gage designs.
