The purpose of the effort was to develop a fully qualified display console capable of satisfying both the data management and radar display requirements. This effort was undertaken to remove the limitations of available display hardware including sheer weight, bulk, power, operating availability and performance which inhibit their direct application to tactical and airborne environments. The 16 in. Modular Display Tactical MDT assures the AF an optimum, yet flexible, display capability thru a hardware design incorporating the most recent advances in display technology. The report covers the design and development of the 16 in. Modular Display unit. This developmental model is a high performance, flexible display unit which can be configured by the addition of a variety of functional modules to meet user requirements ranging from a high speed radar display combining raw video with processed tracking information to a full scale data management configuration. The unit features a high speed digital sweep 10 megabits per second, 12 bit resolution, a 4.6 microsecond average character writing speed, and 15 microsecond positioning time per CRT diameter with a low power deflection system. These characteristics are combined in a lightweight package ranging from 90 lbs to 99 lbs. Author
