The finite element procedure is applied to determine the stress concentration in the region of a hole in plates subjected to transverse loading. The finite element adopted in the analysis is that of an arbitrary triangular hybrid element. To accurately depict the sharp stress gradient in the stress concentration region, a step-by-step numerical scheme is incorporated in the finite element analysis in which the overall stress concentration region is reduced proportionally as the element sizes are successively reduced. Thus, during the entire solution process, the total number of simultaneous equations to be solved is kept to a reasonable number even though the element size approaches an infinitesimal limit much smaller than the plate thickness.
