An experimental investigation was conducted to study the response of copper-polyethylene solid mixtures to one-dimensional impacts at .5 to 2.5 kmsec using 12.7 mm and 13.7 mm projectiles. Small bore powder guns are shown to be capable of producing reasonably accurate Hugoniot data. A simple ideal mixing theory for describing the behavior of solid mixtures under shock loading was evaluated and found to be valid within the limits of experimental data scatter. The free surface velocity approximation is shown to break down under conditions where target materials undergo phase transformations. Acoustic velocities in mixtures can be accurately predicted by the mixing theory. Author
