Abstract:
A study was made to determine whether jet turbulence is orderly in any sense, and whether the order can be enhanced and controlled by a slight periodic surging imposed at the jet exit. The technological motivation for the study was jet noise. To the extent that turbulent mixing can be accomplished by an orderly process, a new range of noise-suppression techniques becomes available, and the problem of predicting jet noise becomes much simpler.
