Abstract:

An accurate spectrophotometric method is proposed for the determination of calcium in zirconium and titanium powders by use of murexide. In the method a 0.4-gram sample is dissolved in hydrofluoric and sulfuric acids and the solution is evaporated to fumes of sulfuric acid. An ammoniacal precipitation is then made to precipitate the zirconium, titanium, and other elements, and an aliquot containing 0.2 gram of the sample is filtered. The ammonium salts are destroyed by treatment with nitric and hydrochloric acids and evaporation to dryness. The calcium is then determined spectrophotometrically using murexide. A study was made of the calcium murexide color and interferences. Author
