Resonance filter data obtained from a Ly alpha scanning photometer on OGO 6 imply a mean exospheric hydrogen temperature of 900 degrees K for 8 June 1969, with a 200 degrees K variation dawn to dusk between 6 and 18 hr local time near the equator. Due to the tilt of the orbit planes by approximately one hour toward the summer pole, a north-south asmmetry of about 75 degrees K is seen as well. These data strongly suggest that sources of Ly beta external to the geocorona are smaller than previously thought. Author
