Abstract:
The autoxidation of a film of atactic polypropylene APP in the presence of cobalt salts was studied quantitatively by means of infrared spectroscopy. Reactions were traced as a function of temperature, oxygen concentration and time. Temperatures varied from 100 to 130C and oxygen concentrations from 5 to 100 by volume. A general reaction scheme previously reported by the authors for the uncatalyzed autoxidation of atactic polypropylene was modified to account for the cobalt acetylacetonate-catalyzed autoxidation of APP in the bulk phase.
