HYPERBARIC OXYGEN ENHANCEMENT OF COXSACKIE VIRUS B-1 INFECTION IN YOUNG MICE.

This study presents the results obtained with mice subjected to combined coxsackievirus infection and hyperbaric oxygenation. Coxsackie virus was chosen because of its ubiquitous human distribution along with predictable decreasing sensitivity in mice with increasing age. Consequently, this system afforded a potential human hazard model of enhanced viral susceptibility against a background of decreased host sensitivity. In addition, preliminary experiments in our laboratory with cell cultures, poliovirus, and coxsackie virus had indicated greater hyperbaric enhancement with the latter virus.
