Abstract:

Treatment of biscarborane, 1-1-1,2-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane12 -1,2-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane12, with alcoholic base initially leads to the selective removal of a single boron atom to give the 7-1-1,2-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane12-7,8 -dicarba-nido-dodecahydroundecaborate -1 ion and one mole-equivalent of H2. Further base degradation produces the dianion 7-7-7,8-dicarba-nido-dodecahydroundecaborate-7,8-dicarbanido -dodecahydroundecaborate2- and another mole-equivalent of H2. Author
