Abstract:

A single cruise of the RV CHOCO to San Andres and Providencia Islands and the nearby coral banks of Quitasueno and Serrana in August, 1969, gave information and results which allowed a preliminary estimation of the fishing potential of these areas. A catch of 12 kilos of spiny lobsters per fisherman per day was estimated from results of fishing by eight local fishermen on Quitasueno Bank, from which an annual yield of 190 metric tons of spiny lobsters is estimated. Also from information on present annual catches and observed daily catches of fishes of various species, an estimate of a total annual yield of 20,000 tons of fishes for the whole area was postulated. Relative abundance of commercial fish species is discussed. Author
