Abstract:
The main purpose of this Grant was to develop the quantum mechanical theory of elastic and inelastic scattering of light atoms by crystal surfaces. In so far as the elastic theory is concerned it was shown the importance of the resonance scattering with the bound states adsorbed or surface states of the particle in explaining the experimental results, for He scattering on LiF. With regard to the inelastic scattering the authors have developed a one-phonon theory and suggested an experimental method which will permit to deduce complete information on the surface phonon spectrum. The Grant also pursued the development of the phenomanological theory of surfaces particularly regarding the stability of surface morphology during crystal growth and similar processes. Author
