The paper describes an artificial language called PADEL which may be used to describe line drawings. The language may be thought of as being a translational grammar in that picture elements correspond in a one to one way with the languages vocabulary. The picture elements of interest are first described. PADELs grammar is then formally defined followed by a description of the correspondence between picture elements and elements in the grammar. This grammar is then analyzed as an element of the set of phrase structured grammars. It is then shown that this grammar is a finite state or regular grammar. Finally a regular expression describing all possible strings in the language is derived. Author
