Abstract:
Absorption by neutral hydrogen has been detected in the galaxy M82. Measurements were carried out with the transit radio telescope at Nancay. Emission and absorption do not occur at the same velocities. The velocity and width of the absorption profile are i agreement with emission lines detected previously at optical wavelengths along the major axis and close to the center of the galaxy. The neutral absorbing gas is related to the non-circular motions near the center of the galaxy rather than to the rotation as derived from optical absorption lines. The neutral hydrogen temperature cannot be estimated because emission was not detected at the central absorption velocity. Author
