A discussion and description of the STORE Structures Oriented Exchange system that has been developed under the direction of the Office of Naval Research is presented. Utilizing computer time-sharing technology as a tool, the project presents a method for the cost effective development, exchange and use of computer program and information in structural mechanics design and research. The unique features of the system including the active participation of the user in an interactive mode as well as the detailed use of an information space is described. While the present pilot study has been limited to structural mechanics, the general approach can certainly be extended to other disciplines. Author
