Abstract:

A summary is given of the results of research directed largely to an increased understanding of cooperative phenomena observed to occur between simpurity dopant ions in ionic crystals. The phenomena observed were a ion pair absorption in LaCl3 by Ho3 Nd3, by Ho3 Pr3, and by Pr3 Nd3, in which case one photon is absorbed by two ions b satellite structure in which case the perturbation caused by the mutual interaction of neighboring ions produces a shift and splitting of the energy levels relative to the single Ho3 ion levels c multiple ion relaxation processes in Ho3 doped LaCl3, in which case the excitation energy of a single ion is shared nonradiatively with one or more ions in the decay process. A subsidiary effort has been directed towards the understanding of the scattering mechanism responsible for the production of an emission continuum when materials typically used for infrared windows and solid state laser host materials are illuminated by intense monochromatic light.
