Abstract:
The Memorandum is part of a study of the effect of atmospheric turbulence on optical and infrared reconnaissance and guidance equipment. A quantitative understanding of the manner in which an initially coherent beam of finite cross section propagates is required for the prediction of the performance of various devices employing lasers for target acquisition or guidance in tactical missions, optical communication systems, and other devices. The Memorandum calculates the mean intensity distribution for an arbitrary amplitude and phase distribution in a finite aperture in both the near and far field and examines in detail the case of a uniform distribution across a circular aperture. The results should be of use to those interested in propagation theory and its applications to laser range finders, laser line scanners, communication systems, and various guidance and other systems employing an illuminating beam.
