By manipulating only the reinforcement contingency, it was possible to examine the emergent social properties of the behavior of college males performing on a discrimination task. All subjects were given the opportunity for aggression while they performed individually nonsocially and competitively socially in pairs. Social and nonsocial conditions, and the dependent measures of each, were compared. The effects of being the target of competitor aggression were examined by employing an experimental confederate as the competitor.
