Abstract:

The operation of a water trigatron, pulse charged in the region of about 250 kV, has been investigated and has led to the conclusion that although the switch seemed to be triggerable, the delay was so long, 200 nsec and the jitter so large the switch was not practical for most purposes. On the other hand, a three-electrode SF6-filled switch produced some promising results with jitters of 1 to 10 nsec. An improved version of the SF6 three electrode switch was tested in an oil rather than a water environment, pulse charged up to 1.25 MV and subnanosecond jitters were frequently obtained.
