The laminar flow of two dissimilar fluids in an aligned, parallel surface face seal is studied analytically. It is assumed that in the space between the seal faces there are two different constant property fluids separated by an identifiable interface. Velocities and the dominant components of shear stress are matched across this interface. The general two-fluid results are applied to various combinations of water, oil, and air in the reservoirs inside and outside the seal. Performance characteristics of these combinations are presented graphically, along with a discussion of the operating conditions for which no solutions were obtained. Author
