The physical understanding of propagation of the different types of circumferential waves and their application to other areas has not been seriously attempted although a large number of experiments have been performed in this area. The experimentally measured velocity of the circumferential waves have been found to vary with the frequency of the incident wave and it is believed that its magnitude is directly dependent on the relative surface roughness. This result then suggests a simple technique to measure the degree of microscale roughness of the target surface and it is this technique that is the subject of the paper. Author
