Abstract:

The report summarizes the early research of the Isolation Laboratory at the University of Vermont. Two forms of isolation experiences were studied, sound-proofed room exposure and under-water immersion. Results indicate that some subjects are able to tolerate the stresses of isolation much more than others and that these differences can be related to other behavioral and physiological factors. The relation of isolation research to general motivation theory is discussed. Author
