Procedures are recommended for reduced load testing of assembled, off-vehicle generators, alternators, starters, regulators and rectifiers. The recommended procedures are for testing at direct support and general support levels, and were selected to minimize drive power requirements, adapters, and test equipment size, weight, and heat rejection. Advantages and disadvantages of the recommended procedures are given and compared with those of conventional full load test procedures. Effects of the reduced load test procedures on diagnostic test stand power drives, feedback drive systems, starter motor testing, faulty bearing and seal detection, measurement systems, and automation are discussed. Relative cost, weight, size, reliability, and maintainability of the test equipment are considered. Parameters are given for applying the recommended procedures to testing specific equipment. As vehicle electrical power requirements and generating system component ratings increase, new diagnostic test procedures, such as those recommended in this report, can be developed to prevent a corresponding increase in test equipment requirements.
