Abstract:

In Part I the behaviour of structural elements of the beta-arylether type twards neutral sulphite solutions under the conditions of neutral sulphite cooking has been studied using appropriate model compounds. It has been found that the main reactions involved are Cleavage of the beta9-arylether bond in phenolic phenylpropane units with formation of the corresponding styrene-omega-sulphonic acid structures and Cleavage of methylether bonds in phenolic and non-phenolic phenylpropane units with formation of methane sulphonic acid. The results are discussed with reference to known features of neutral sulphite pulping. Part II describes the behaviour of a cyclic benzylaryl ether, dihydro-dehydrodiisoeugenol, and its methyl ether, models of the dimeric units of the phenyl-coumaran type. Author
