RAMAN SCATTERING FROM THE HYDROXYL ION IN ALKALI HALIDES.

Raman scattering has been observed from the hydroxyl ion in NaCl, Kcl, and KBr crystals. The measurements were made using an argon ion laser as a light source and a tandem double monochromator with photoelectric detection. A Raman emission attributed to the stretching motion of the OH9- ion was seen in all samples. The stretching bands in KBrOH- and KClOH- showed no resolvable structure. However, at 15 K, the stretching band in NaClOH- appeared to be composed of two lines separated by about 2.8cm. RRaman scattering from the stretching level of OD- doped NaCl was observed whereas no corresponding infrared absorption has been seen. Author
