Abstract:

A critical and systematic review of the analysis of the velocity field is presented, together with some original contributions. The source of radiant energy is taken to be a hot, optically-thin plasma. The opening chapters are devoted to a discussion of the kinetic temperature and mass-motion in a plasma, followed by a criterion of distinguishing between the two forms of motion. The experimental methods of separating thermal motion from random mass-motion named commotion are then classified. The larger part of the paper is devoted to the method of separation called the method of different ionic species, in which the broadening of spectral lines from these species is measured. It is concluded that in view of the severe restrictions placed on this method, it can only be used successfully in special cases rather than generally. Author
