Abstract:

An alternative to the so-called integral method of image recognition, in which the image is considered to be a whole unit, is proposed. The defects of the integral method are explained and it is stated that, because of these defects, the method cannot be used as the basis for designing reading machines for literature using many different type faces. The method here explained is the structural method based on research into the field of structural linguistics. It is assumed, in this basic theory, that sets of primitive symbols the structural elements, sets of parameters, and sets of constructional operations are specified. The image is considered the result of the application of the rules of derivation and transformation to the original set of structural elements. The analysis of the unknown image consists in extracting and identifying the primitive symbols, estimating their parameters, and establishing the types of constructive operations for composing the form.
