Structural design problems can be considered to be optimization problems because a design is sought which is optimal by some criterion subject to limitations on size, behavior, or other aspects of the structure. Under certain conditions, such problems may be solved by conventional mathematical programming techniques. The minimum weight design of a statically indeterminate three-bar truss is used to illustrate the application of the sequential unconstrained minimization technique of Fiacco and McCormick to the optimal design of trussed structures.
