The adsorption wear hypothesis, that an increase in tool life is possible with a certain combination of temperature and cutting rate, was confirmed experimentally for an R-18 one-piece high-speed tool in an oxygen medium. Steels 40kh, 5 and 3 were used. It was shown that the effect of using oxygen depends basically on the temperaturerate combination and is less affected by workability of the material.
