A simple theory has been developed to give the equilibrium nose shape of an ablating body in laminar hypersonic flow. The problem of a lack of body scale, encountered by Simpkins, was overcome in the present theory by using the more accurate heat transfer relation given by Lees. The pressure distribution over the body was assumed to be Newtonian. Comparisons are made between experimental shapes obtained in the Aerospace Corporation arc tunnel and those given by Simpkins. Good agreement is shown except near the shoulder of the body, where the accuracy of the Newtonian formula decreases. The theory shows that the equilibrium shape is more blunt than a hemisphere.
