Abstract:

The primary objective of the conference reviewed was calibration of the numerous procedures for analyzing turbulent boundary layers. Summaries of the state of knowledge regarding separation, the structure of turbulence, and other related physics and research needs were also undertaken. Conference preparation included selection and standardization of a set of base data for comparison with theory. Thirty-three flows were selected and 16 of these made mandatory for workers submitting prediction papers to the conference. An evaluation committee provided a rough order of merit of reliability with which various methods predict the mandatory flows, and used this information to examine the utility and promise of various physical assumptions and mathematical frameworks.
