Experimental studies were carried out on the understanding of non-stoichiometry and disorder in inorganic ionic crystals. A mechanistic model for generating crystollographic shear CS structures is proposed. Electron diffractionmicroscopy is used for examining the crystals of the various oxides of the outer transition metals. Isobaric studies of the oxides of praeseodymium, curium, and americium are undertaken. Crystallographic shear studies were made on the niobium dioxyfluoride, vanadium oxide and rutile structures. Related thermodynamic measurements are being made with a solid state galvanic cell. Magnetic susceptibility studies have been made on various rare earth oxide systems, including lanthumum, cerium, gadolinium, praeseodymium, titanium, molybdenum, thulium, and ytterbium. Structures of high- and low-temperature forms of the phase of tri-zirconoum tetra-ytterbium duodica oxide have been determined by single x-ray studies. Author
