A summary is given of the most significant results of a four year research program on the kinetics of atomsolid reactions at elevated temperatures. Microwave-discharge fast-flow vacuum system techniques, coupled with electrical resistance heating of the reacting specimens, have been used throughout. Reactions studied include the attack of isotropic and pyrolytic graphite, tungsten, molybdenum, rhenium, boron and silicon carbide by O-atoms, N-atoms, H-atoms and OH-radicals. Results have also been obtained for the reactivity of solids in important atomic mixtures e.g., SiCs in Og Ng mixtures.
