Abstract:
The development of an intermittent target beam system for use in conjunction with the CAL shock-tube-driven molecular beam is reported. The beam is 1 inch in diameter and has a density of approximately 4 x 10 to the 12th particlescu cm. A room-temperature source is used. The operation of a mass spectrometer in the environment of a 2.14 ev argon beam has also been studied and it has been found necessary to employ extensive shielding of the instrument from residual ionization, radiation and background scattering.
