Abstract:

As part of research to develop techniques for use in the training of range estimation, the accuracies of two visual methods of determining specific ground-to-aircraft distances were compared. Using the Flyover method, training assistants signaled when the aircraft flew over markers placed at known distances from the training site. Using the Range Sight method, training assistants used a ranging device similar to a protractor to indicate when an aircraft passed each of several reference markers corresponding to known distances and angles from the training site.
