Abstract:

The research has been concerned with the optimization of large systems having special structure. The structures studied are 1 separable systems that is, systems composed of coupled subsystems, 2 countercurrent systems, 3 systems evolving according to a set of ordinary differential equations, and 4 stochastics systems evolving according to a Markov process. In studying 1 the problem was decomposed into a set of coordinated subproblems, while in 2 the subsystems were aggregated and simplified. Under 3, a number of efficient finite dimensional optimization methods have been extended to this infinite dimensional case. In 4, an approach to optimal design was constructed which does not require explicit knowledge of the steady state behavior of the system. Author
