Abstract:
Pure and alloyed silicide coatings offer some of the most promising means of protecting the refractory metals from high temperature oxidation. In the intermediate temperature range, however, they are prone to rapid disintegration of the bulk material which has been termed silicide pest. Studies of the mechanisms of protection and failure of a modified disilicide coating for a 90Ta-10W alloy have evolved a simple method for alleviating the silicide pest by a preoxidation treatment.
